(Professor of Liberal Arts and International Studies at the Colorado School of Mines),中国人民大学哲学学院特聘教授。
(Climate Change as a Philosophical Problem)
This talk will begin with a non-scientist’s general summary of the scientific consensus on climate change and review the engagement of public activists concerning the proper societal response. It will then briefly reference some epistemological and ontological problems associated with climate change research. The last half of the presentation, however, will emphasize ethical and political philosophical issues. My claim is that climate change presents an historically unprecedented challenge to us as human beings, one that we are not yet adequately addressing — and that it is increasingly unlikely we will be able to forestall global scale human disasters. The fundamental questions then become: What should we think? What should we do?
