Call for Papers and Panel Proposals
9th APRU DOCTORAL STUDENTS CONFERENCE
Hosted by Far Eastern National University
14 – 18 July, 2008
We are pleased to announce that the 9th Annual Association of Pacific Rim Universities Doctoral Students Conference (APRU DSC) will take place in the Far Eastern National University (FENU), Vladivostok, Russia, from 14 to 18 July 2008.
The FENU Organizing Committee calls for papers/panel proposals for presentations to be given at the 9th APRU DSC. The conference theme is “Leading Research for a Better Future: Pacific Scope, Global Impact”.
Doctoral students from all disciplines, including, but not limited to, the social sciences, the humanities, engineering, natural sciences, biological sciences, architectural designs, administration, and business are invited to submit an abstract and present a paper related to their doctoral research.
As with previous conferences, the 9th APRU DSC aims to help doctoral students deepen and widen their research interests through discussions with other participants from diverse academic backgrounds. The conference will include plenary sessions, workshops, contributed paper sessions, and panel sessions. The conference will create an atmosphere for doctoral students to interact, share their research interests, network, and establish lifelong friendships among PhD students.
Participation at this conference will be subjected to a selection process by the host university on criteria such as the quality of submitted abstracts and geographical representation by APRU member universities.
The presentation of papers can take place under the (1) paper sessions or (2) panel sessions. The two stated sessions are similar accept that the panel sessions will require doctoral students to submit panel proposals and form panel sessions focused on a specific area/issue, in order to initiate more focused discussions. It should be noted that the eventual selection of participants would be based on their abstracts and not the accepted panel proposals.
Papers presented in the contributed paper and panel sessions are expected to be drawn from all academic disciplines including, but not limited to, the following disciplines:
Anthropology, Archaeology, Arts, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Commerce, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Economics, Education, Engineering, Health Care, History, Information Technology, International Relations, Law, Life Sciences, Linguistics, Literature, Mathematics, Medicine, Philosophy, Psychology, Physics, Political Science, and Sociology.
The official language of the conference is English. Abstracts, paper presentations and all conference materials will be in English. Approximately 80 doctoral students will be selected to present papers at the Doctoral Students Conference at FENU. Information about registration will be provided on the conference web site in due course.
Notes for Panel Proposals
1. Panel proposals should be submitted in English using the On-Line Registration system (http://www.fenu.ru/dsc2008).
2. Each panel proposal should include a panel title, the organizer's name, and the details of possible presenters.
3. Panel members should include presenters from at least three different universities or three separate disciplines.
4. You are encouraged to submit your abstract of the paper according to the panel you have proposed.
5. In order to participate in the 9th APRU DSC, it should be noted that the selection of participants would be based on their abstracts and not the accepted panel proposals.
6.
It is expected that panel organizers will chair the panels they organize, and be involved in the selection of papers for their panels, if their abstracts have been accepted by the FENU Organizing Committee.
Notes for Abstracts
1. Abstracts and any accompanying paper should be submitted in English using the On-Line Registration system (http://www.fenu.ru/dsc2008).
2. Each abstract should contain a description of the paper not exceeding 400 words, and should include the title, author's name, institutional affiliation, nationality, discipline, a maximum of 5 keywords, and a panel preference (optional). The keywords are designed to provide a guide to the areas/issues covered by the paper.
3. The criteria for judging the abstracts will be the same as those used at 8th APRU DSC in Keio University, namely:
1) Purpose of the paper &/or questions/issues being addressed
2) Important assumptions of the analysis being undertaken (hypothesis)
3) Methodology &/or data
4) The contribution of the paper
5) Implication of the findings
4. If there is more than one author, the name of the person who is going to be the presenter shall be clearly indicated in the abstract.
5. In principle, the person presenting the paper must be a doctoral student enrolled at a university that is a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) at the time the abstract is submitted. However, FENU will allow a small number (approximately five) of doctoral students enrolled at universities that are not members of APRU to present their papers at the DSC conference. In this case, the papers should have some connection to the Asia-Pacific region, and students must provide a letter of recommendation from a member of the faculty or department where they are enrolled.
6. In order to participate in the 9th APRU DSC, it should be noted that participation is subject to the acceptance of abstracts by the FENU Organizing Committee.
Financial Support
FENU will provide free accommodation for the DSC participants at the time of conference.
Free pick-up from the airport will also be arranged.
FENU will not be charging registration fees for the 9th Annual Association of Pacific Rim Universities Doctoral Students Conference.
